Staying At a Wilderness Resort Cabin
This last weekend, our family rented a cabin in Nisswa, MN. We stayed at the Wilderness Resort on Middle Cullen Lake. Even though it was only a weekend, it was our first ‘family vacation’-no relatives, no friends, just us, the kids, and the dog.
We’ve been wanting to get to a resort and found a nice place at the Wilderness Resort. It was a dog friendly place, even though you had to pay an extra $20/night. The beach was a hit with our 2 year old as he could’ve played in the water and sand for the entire day, each day. For those families with little ones and dogs, this would be a good resort for you to try. The resort also included a newly built indoor pool/gym/game room for those rainy days, but thankfully for us, the weather was great.
Our time on the lake didn’t include any fishing, because it was nearly impossible to keep our 2 year old son from grabbing the rod and wanting to swing it all over the place. So we left the rods back at the cabin while we went for boat rides. Boredom can set it quick for a two year old, so I used a couple tricks up my sleeve to keep him entertained through no wake zones and other slow areas. He hadn’t seen the livewell yet, so I turned on the aerator and let it fill up with water and told him the fishies go in there. A handful of rocks from the beach area were also fun for him to throw in the water. Then as he was digging through anything he could find, he found some old twister tails that kept him busy for about 2 hours. He brought them from the boat into the cabin and would’ve brought them to bed if I didn’t take them away. He finally had his own fishing baits and he loved it. I’d recommend picking up a pack sometime to help keep your kids interested and entertained. Beware of the choking hazard they can represent though, keep an eye them.
Overall, our trip was a good one and we will hopefully be going to another cabin next summer. This was a relatively inexpensive getaway for our family and it was a great time at that. There are plenty of nice days left this summer, take advantage of the weather and spend some time at a relaxing cabin soon.
Good luck fish’n
