If you aren’t paying attention, you might be spending unneccesary money every year on new batteries. With a few minutes of maintenance here and there with a charger, you can extend the life of your batteries for your boat, atv, flasher, or anything else that uses a battery. Different types of batteries tend to require different maintenance, so do some quick studying online to learn how to maintain your batteries for the longest life possible. You can save your self thousands of dollars throughout your lifetime by doing so.
I’ve gone through three different batteries for my ice fishing flasher in the last 3 years. I’m getting frustrated with paying $20-$30 for each battery when I don’t think I should have to. Part of it has to do with the quality of the battery, but a lot of it can be prevented by me just charging the batteries once every month, or every other month, during the offseason.
By spending 15 minutes, one day a month, I can hook up the charger on my batteries, let them sit and check back when they are finished. All I have to do is unplug the charger and cables. I have tried to keep up this routine so far with my boat batteries, this winter, and I’ll find out how they do in the next few months when I pull them out and throw them back in the boat.
A good way to remember to charge the batteries is whenever a new month starts, to do some maintenance around the house, and I include the battery charging with that.
I’m still learning how to properly maintain my batteries to extend their life. I encourage you to do the same. You’ll be a lot happier when your trolling motor has juice to run all day and doesn’t die in the first hour of the season.
