Johnson Outdoors Marine Electronics, Inc. announced it acquired assets of Waypoint Technologies, the maker of LakeMaster. LakeMaster has been the leader of high definition electronic lake charts for many northern US lakes. With the acquisition, LakeMaster will have the oppurtunity and resources to expand from a regional leader, to a national (possibly worldwide) empire of bathymetric maps.
This transition may have a large affect upon other fish finder brands, such as Lowrance and Garmin. Johnson Outdoors, owner of the Humminbird product line, may limit new products to be exclusively used in Humminbird products. This could leave owners of Lowrance and Garmin units out in the cold.
LakeMaster has been producing high definition lake maps with up to 1ft contour detail for years. Fisherman have been able to use these distinct maps in their fish finding sonar units to increase fishing productivity on the water. As fish relate to depth changes, structure, and food, these maps, along with high power sonar, give the advantage to the fisherman.
