My favorite fishing snack…Okay, I think it should be it’s own food group.
Everyone enjoys a snack when the fishing is slow. I have to say, hands down, my favorite has got to be jerky. I don’t care if it’s beef, turkey, venison, whatever. Chewing on a piece of jerky is great for passing some time in the boat or on the ice. It also keeps your stomach satisfied for a long period of time.
The only real downside to jerky is the price. It can be hard to justify buying a $7 bag that just doesn’t seem to last that long. If this sounds familiar for anyone else. I have to recommend you try making your own jerky. It’s easier than you might think.
The main thing you will need is a food dehydrater. You can slice thin strips off of cuts of meat, or you can use ground beef with a jerky gun. This will form the shape of jerky for you and you just squeeze the trigger to push the meat onto the dehydrater shelves. Add some seasoning to the meat before you start, put it on the dehydrater, let it sit for the recommended hours, and bam, beef jerky in a day.
Cabela’s has all the things you need to get started. Currently, they have jerky guns on sale too.
When the kids start getting ancy in the boat, give them a piece of your homeade beef jerky and help them enjoy the experience of being on the water a little more. Make a bunch for your next fishing trip. Everyone loves beef jerky, why not be the guy everyone wants along on their fishing trips?
My name is Brad Bolton, a husband and father of four. I live in Minnesota and I enjoy spending time in the outdoors and also spending time with my family. If there is water nearby, I want to fish it.
