A fisherman is always being tested. A musky fisherman gets tested even more. I finally got to taste a small bit of sweetness on a nemesis lake near me…that being Sugar Lake. 6th time is the charm is what they say right? *sound off the buzzer, AAEHHH!*
It’s taken me 6 different expeditions on the clear waters of Sugar Lake to finally catch a musky, albeit a 29 incher. Although my expectations were higher, I feel like I’ve done the impossible. Heck, my first 4 visits to the lake resulted in one small northern following my lure(over the course of two summers). 5th try, a FOLLOW! What? there are actually muskies in this lake? My fish finder doesn’t lie? very often anyway? And to top it off, the 6th time is the charm.
After the first two trips on Sugar Lake, my mental toughness was depleted. The only reason I dared go back is the fact that it is the closest lake with muskies in it. 3rd and 4th times, it was nice to get in the boat and enjoy the weather, so what the heck, might as well give it a shot.
After that, a hunch and a feeling is all a musky fisherman needs to keep him motivated. So many times we head home with no fish caught or even seen. But we know they are there, and our minds are constantly churning out different scenarios that might cause a musky to crush one of our lures.
A follow last week on Sugar Lake was all I needed to get the juices flowing again, and dream of the possibilities. Looking at the outdoor calendar in my cubicle at work, I noticed a night when the moon and sun were setting within 5 minutes of each other. If I needed any more motivation, that was it. The Mrs. switched shifts with a co-worker so she could watch our little boy, which gave me the oppurtunity to get out and spend some time doing something that has become an increasingly smaller part of my life. I look forward to our children being old enough to come along, and enjoy the sweetness of a musky on Sugar Lake one day.
My name is Brad Bolton, a husband and father of four. I live in Minnesota and I enjoy spending time in the outdoors and also spending time with my family. If there is water nearby, I want to fish it.
