Time is a valuable resource, it’s a shame to waste it.
If you are finding it difficult to find time to get out in the boat, and you haven’t spent a lot of time with your family lately, set aside an evening or weekend to get in the boat with your family. Make yourself do it. It’s easy to stay at home and watch TV, a memory you’ll likely forget by the next morning. Get the family packed up with a snack and get out in the boat for a cruise around a local lake. These are the memories that you’ll proudly remember.
Genuinely, us fisherman will have the urge to bring along some poles. This time, leave them at home. Focus on enjoying the privilege of driving around the lake, and take in its beauty. If it is just you and your wife, share stories of your favorite moments at the lake. You may find yourself setting up a future vacation, relaxing at a cabin somewhere, overlooking the water having some drinks, and watching the sunset.
If you have the kids along, make it fun for them. Don’t turn the boat into a floating prison that they can’t get away from. Bring snacks and drinks to help keep them occupied, and play some games. A deck of cards, and a game of Go Fish (pun intended) can make the experience enjoyable for everyone. Maybe a refreshing dip in the lake is what everyone needs. With younger kids, their attention spans are shorter, so cut the boat ride a little short if they start getting ancy. If there is public land and you can pull up to shore, take the kids out exploring along the shoreline. Do what it takes to make the most of the experience for you and them.
However, don’t forget to bring along the fish finder. While cruising around the lake, multitask and take advantage of the opportunity to find some new fishing spots. But remember, this isn’t only about you finding your next spot to try, it’s about the family, so make it a secondary task that blends in to your fun-filled adventure. Before you click away from this page, get up and go over to set a date with your family/friends to spend some time in the boat. You’ll be glad you did.
My name is Brad Bolton, a husband and father of four. I live in Minnesota and I enjoy spending time in the outdoors and also spending time with my family. If there is water nearby, I want to fish it.
